As part of our commitment to energy\ntransition, we have fitted one of our ships with 21<sup>st<\/sup>-century sails.\nFour aluminium sails, in fact, will provide power to the <em>Marfret Niolon<\/em> as\nit is borne by the trade winds on the MPV service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the\nforce of the wind -a clean, free and infinite source of energy- for assistance\nwas the subject of a months-long study, which led to Marfret equipping the <em>Marfret\nNiolon<\/em> with four wing-shaped sails, which are expected to provide fuel\nsavings of between 10 and 15%. \u201cWe firmly believe in the future of\ncontainerisation and energy and that\u2019s what led us to opt for the technology\ndeveloped by the Dutch firm eConowind.\u201d Indeed, the wing-sails are easy to\ndeploy and, since they are stored in a 40\u2019 container. \u201cAll the ingenuity of the\ncontainer, the foundation in many ways of our business, has here been applied\nto a system to assist the ship\u2019s propulsion,\u201d points out Guillaume Vidil. Containerisation also allows great\nadaptability, as the wings can easily be transferred from one ship to another to\nsuit the needs of our shipping lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, the\ncontrol system and hydraulics deploy the sails and retract them on entering\nport. The quartermaster on the bridge decides when to raise or lower the sails,\ndepending on the weather conditions encountered during the voyage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marfret intends extending the system to its entire\nroro fleet, combining it with coupled reversible alternators, providing hybrid\nwind and electric power. \u201cWe are committed to making our energy transition\nhappen and to develop our position as a company apart from the rest,\u201d insists Vidil.\nAs the world begins to grasp the challenges laid down by global warming,\nMarfret intends playing its part in the collective effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photo: The <em>Marfret Niolon<\/em> fitted with four\naluminium sails that will provide fuel savings of 10-15%.\n&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A wind of innovation is blowing through Marfret.
