It\u2019s the shipping company\u2019s eternal dilemma: charter or purchase?  To be fair, the answer isn\u2019t as obvious as one might think, since the shipping business is subject to continual cycles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the ship charter market has gone through the\nroof, a consequence of the rebound from the health crisis, especially out of\nAsia and in America, which is totally congested.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily costs\nhave skyrocketed, with a knock-on effect on freight rates, exacerbated by\nrising oil prices. It\u2019s a situation that has seen a return to favour of non-vessel-operating\ncommon carriers (NVOCCs<\/a>[M1]<\/a> ),\nwho are currently surfing the wave.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upward\nspiral that we have experienced since November 2020 highlights the subtle and skilful\nbalancing act shipping companies need to perform between owned and chartered\nvessels in their fleets. Indeed, chartering raises the issue of multi-year\ncommitment with very limited visibility with regard to fluctuations in markets\nand supply and demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its\nrefusal to sit by and endure the increases, over the years and depending on\nmeans Marfret has managed to protect itself by purchasing seven ships, thus\nreducing the risk factor on its regular services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inn a\ncontext of strong growth in containerized freight, our company recently\ncompleted the purchase of an eighth ship, the Nordmaple<\/em>, which until recently was on charter on our NASP service\nbetween Europe, the United States and the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n2500-TEU Nordmaple<\/em>, with its 750\nreefer plugs, is a relatively new ship, having been built in 2018. It is\nequipped with a latest-generation fuel-injected engine that meets the strictest\nEEDI requirements. Its excellent fuel economy completely fulfils our NASP\nservice\u2019s needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition\nto safeguarding our business structure, this new acquisition reflects our\ncompany\u2019s policy of constant improvement in our CO2\/tonne carried emissions\nratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
